KATHMANDU: An award worth Rs. 50,000 was distributed among 10
Newar girls, who underwent a group Ihi (Bel Vivah) ritual at Kathmandu
on Friday.
Social workers, doctors and few businessmen joined hands to collect the sum for the award to celebrate the 43rd consecutive year of the organisation of group Ihi ceremony this way.
Awards were distributed by a random lottery.
Shobika Tandukar (Putalisadak), Riya Shrestha (Nardevi), Shreya Shrestha (Sitapaila), Vibhuti Ranjit (Jaisideval), Jasmi Shrestha (Chabahil), Sakrina Maharjan (Jaisideval), Savyata Shrestha (Trishuli), Yogisa Nakarmi (Asan), Anustha Singh (Tahachal) and Purnima Tuladhar (Janabahal) were among the awarded.
"The award is in fact a little contribution for the girl for her marriage when she reaches at age," says the organiser Dineshananda Rajopadhyaya.
Devoted to the living Goddess Kumari, he asserts every Newar girl before this ceremony is a living Kumari in our culture.
"Group ceremony saves a lot," he asserts, "and this promotes social life too." He started organising such group ceremony without any fare.
Complaining of unhealthy ways of taking money in the name of tickets, he says, "We did this to serve society and people, not for money."
Dr. Yogendra Bhakta Shrestha, who also had one of his relative brought for this year's ceremony, says that this is a good social initiative as rituals are performed in lowest cost and greatest social harmony.
